Two Lizards in the Drain Line during an AC drain line cleaning: What We Use, What We Don’t, and Why Maintenance Matters

Shop vac bucket full of dirty AC drain water and debris after cleaning a clogged air conditioner drain line in Florida yard

When you work HVAC in Florida long enough, you see some wild things in people’s drain lines.

On this visit, it was two tiny lizards.

We were on a routine maintenance tune-up — not an emergency call, not a leak, just our normal visit where we clean and clear the AC drain line as part of our standard checklist. I hooked up the shop vac like we always do, turned it on, and out came dirty drain water, slime… and two small lizards that had decided the pipe was a hiding spot on a cool night.

Good news:

  • They weren’t the cause of a blockage.

  • The line was flowing.

  • And thanks to the cleaner we use, they’re still with us to tell the story.

Why we use bio-friendly cleaner during a AC drain line cleaning

If you look at the photos, you’ll see our eco-friendly cleaner mixed in with the drain water and the lizards. This is exactly why we use it.

We’re in people’s homes, around pets, wildlife, and landscaping every single day. When we flush a drain or blow out a line, that discharge ends up outside — in the grass, near plants, or sometimes close to where small critters hang out.

So at Cool Air M.D. we choose bio-friendly products that:

  • Help break down algae and slime in the line

  • Are designed to be easier on the environment than harsh chemicals

  • Won’t leave behind strong chemical fumes

After we saw the lizards in the vac during the AC drain line cleaning, we rinsed them off gently with clean water from the hose to make sure any cleaner was diluted and washed away. They sat there for a moment, like they were catching their breath after the ride of their life, and then took off back into the yard.

We keep people safe first — but when we can keep the critters safe too, we’re happy about that.

“Should I put a screen on my AC drain line to keep lizards out?”

This is a question we get all the time in Hernando, Pasco, and Citrus Counties. After seeing these photos, you might be thinking the same thing.

Our answer? For most homes, we recommend not covering the end of the drain line.

Here’s why:

  • A screen or cap will catch normal gunk: algae, dirt, and slime.

  • That everyday buildup is a much bigger risk than a lizard wandering in once in a blue moon.

  • Once that screen starts to clog, the pipe can plug completely and back water into your home.

In 30+ years of doing this, I’ve seen far more flooded closets, ceilings, and air handlers caused by a partially plugged screen or homemade cap than by anything living in the line.

These two lizards?

  • First time I’ve seen that happen in a couple of years.

  • They weren’t blocking the line.

  • We just happened to catch them during our normal tune-up cleaning.

So while it sounds like a good idea to “keep critters out,” for most homeowners, a screened drain is more likely to cause a problem than solve one.

Why this happened now (and what mild weather has to do with it)

The timing also tells part of the story.

Because of the recent mild weather, this customer hadn’t needed to run their AC much for a few days. That means the drain line wasn’t carrying its usual steady stream of condensation. Instead of water constantly flowing through the pipe like it does in summer, it dried out a bit.

To a lizard on a cool Florida night, that drain opening probably felt like:

  • A sheltered spot out of the breeze

  • A tiny cave to hide in

  • A place that usually has a little moisture and warmth

Honestly, if I were a lizard, I might have crawled in there too.

So this wasn’t a “your system is failing” issue — it was a great example of how nature takes advantage of any little space it can find when the weather shifts.

Why drain line cleaning is part of every Cool Air M.D. maintenance visit

Whether we find algae, gunk, or the occasional stowaway lizard, we clean the drain line the same way on every maintenance visit. That’s just part of how we operate.

When we’re at your home, our maintenance checklist includes things like:

  • Clearing and treating the condensate drain line

  • Checking for any signs of past overflow or water damage

  • Inspecting electrical components and safety switches

  • Checking refrigerant pressures and performance

  • Inspecting ductwork we can access for obvious issues

  • Making sure the system is running the way it was designed to

We don’t “skip the messy parts” just because it’s a quiet weather week. Your system gets the same care whether it’s 98° and miserable out or a cool, breezy day.

That’s a big part of who we are as a company, and it’s why this line from today is going into our playbook:

We do the same standard every time at every home.”

That’s the bar we set for ourselves on every maintenance, every repair, every install.

What homeowners can take away from this

A couple of lizards in a drain line might make for a funny story, but it also comes with a few important reminders:

  • Don’t ignore your drain line. It’s small, but it can cause big problems if it’s never cleaned.

  • Be careful about covers and screens. You’re more likely to create a clog than stop one.

  • Mild weather is the perfect time for maintenance. When your system gets a break, that’s when we can get in, clean things thoroughly, and get you ready for the next hot stretch.

  • Eco-friendly matters. The cleaners we use touch your home, yard, and sometimes wildlife, so we choose products that do the job without being harsh.

Need your AC checked (no lizards required)?

If you can’t remember the last time your drain line was properly cleaned, or you’ve noticed musty smells or water around your air handler, we’d be glad to take a look.

We’ll show up, walk you through what we find, and give your system the same careful, consistent standard we’d want in our own homes — the same standard every time at every home.
